Be a Speaker 2016

09 February 2015

It’s time to release our call for ideas for TEDxSaltLakeCity 2016, which will be held on September 17th at Kingsbury Hall. This year's theme: Meraki.

"UPCYCLE (v): to reuse, repurpose, revitalize in such a way as to

create a new product of a higher quality or value than the original."

Out with the old, in with the new? We disagree.

Innovation isn't just about novel creation and pursuit of unexplored frontiers. Some of the best innovations in tech, entertainment, and design create new value simply by "repurposing" the discarded stuff.

The word upcycle is fairly new in our lexicon, but the concept is showing up in people and places that astound and inspire. We’re not just talking about a wine box turned shoe rack. It’s transforming anything--tangible or abstract--into something better.

Tell us how your big idea is "upcycling" some part of our world!

But wait...before you do that, you’re gonna want to read this: We stand by the TED format of promoting talks that are free from political boundaries, economic expectations, personal biases, faulty claims and hidden agendas. At TEDxSaltLakeCity, we believe in creating community, cultivating leadership, opening up conversation to all interested voices, and being a space where Salt Lake can gather for upgraded, inclusive discussion of all topics. That is why we spread our speaker application as far and deep as we can and consider all entries. We trust you’ll wow us, Salt Lake City!

(Psst... this open curation format actually means more work on our end. But hey, featuring a day of talks that integrates a wide array of opinions, strata, and interests is where we believe real mind expansion happens. We'll put in the extra work and hope you'll do the same as you thoughtfully submit your idea!)

In order to give all potential speakers the best chance to shine on our stage, we highly recommend you read up on what makes a great TEDx Talk. When we’re reviewing submissions, we can clearly tell who did their homework. Make the investment in your future TEDx-speaker self!
